Why some tummy tuck offers cost less

A low advertised tummy tuck price may be for a mini, which treats only the skin below the belly button and, on our price list, doesn't repair the muscles. Some offers also leave out anesthesia, the facility, the garment or follow-up visits, or run as a special that ends this week. Compare itemized quotes for the same type of tummy tuck, and ask who performs the surgery and where.

Financing is available through Cherry, CareCredit, and United Credit, subject to credit approval. ASPS says most health insurance plans don't cover a tummy tuck.

What is a tummy tuck?

A tummy tuck, or abdominoplasty, is surgery that removes loose skin and fat from the abdomen and, in most cases, ASPS says, repairs weakened or separated abdominal muscles. It flattens and firms the abdomen after pregnancy or weight loss. It is not a weight-loss treatment, and it can't correct stretch marks, except those on the skin it removes.

Am I a good candidate for a tummy tuck?

You may be if loose skin or separated muscles remain after pregnancy or weight loss, your weight has settled, you don't smoke and you're done having children. ASPS describes candidates as healthy, at a stable weight and nonsmokers. Your surgeon confirms it at an exam, including when another procedure suits you better.

What happens on the day of a tummy tuck?

A tummy tuck is done under general anesthesia, and Cleveland Clinic says it can take 1–5 hours, depending on the type. Your surgeon marks the incision while you stand, repairs the muscles when needed, removes the loose skin, closes the incision and fits your compression garment. You usually go home the same day.

Before surgery day, your surgeon examines you, reviews your health history and medications, and tells you how long your surgery will take and what to prepare at home.

   Marking the plan

   Before surgery, your surgeon marks the incision and the skin to remove while you stand, so the plan follows your shape.

   Anesthesia and the incision

   You receive general anesthesia. The incision runs low across the abdomen, between the pubic hairline and the belly button, where underwear covers it. Its length depends on the type of tummy tuck.

   Muscle repair, when needed

   In a full or extended tummy tuck, separated abdominal muscles are stitched back together. The mini and extended mini on our price list don't include this step.

4. 4

   Removing the loose skin

   The skin above is drawn down and the extra skin and fat are removed. In most full tummy tucks, a second incision sets the belly button in its natural place.

   Closing, garment and home

   The incisions are closed, small drains may be placed to carry off fluid, and a compression garment goes on. Someone drives you home and stays with you for at least the first night.

Someone needs to drive you home and, ASPS advises, stay with you for at least the first night. You walk on the day of surgery, which keeps the risk of blood clots in the legs low.

What is tummy tuck recovery like?

Most people walk bent at the waist for 7–10 days, go back to a desk job in about 2 weeks and wear a compression garment for 4–6 weeks. Heavy lifting usually waits 4–8 weeks, and the final result shows at about 3 months, according to ASPS, Cleveland Clinic and surgeons writing on the ASPS website.

1. Day of surgery

   You usually go home the same day, and you walk that day, which keeps the risk of blood clots in the legs low (Cindy Wu, MD, on the ASPS website). Someone stays with you for at least the first night, as ASPS advises.

2. First 7–10 days

   You walk bent at the waist to protect the incision, then stand up straight (Cindy Wu, MD). ASPS says you should be standing tall within a week or two.

3. Weeks 1–2

   Drains, if you have them, come out once the fluid slows (Cindy Wu, MD). Driving, cooking and shopping are often manageable by now (Shahram Salemy, MD).

4. About 2 weeks

   Most people return to a desk job (Cindy Wu, MD), and Cleveland Clinic says to plan at least 1 week off work. After an extended tummy tuck, most return to work at 4–6 weeks (Samir Rao, MD).

5. First few weeks

   No picking up children or anything heavy, so line up help with childcare before surgery (Shahram Salemy, MD).

6. Weeks 4–6

   The compression garment comes off (Cindy Wu, MD), and strenuous exercise comes back once your surgeon clears you (Cleveland Clinic).

7. Weeks 4–8

   Heavy lifting, sex and stretching, usually, once your surgeon clears them (Cleveland Clinic). Running and lifting wait at least 6 weeks (Cindy Wu, MD).

8. Around 8 weeks

   Most people begin to feel more like themselves (Shahram Salemy, MD).

9. About 3 months

   The swelling has gone down and the final result shows (Cindy Wu, MD; Cleveland Clinic). A full recovery takes around this long (Samir Rao, MD).

10. 12–18 months

    The scar turns thinner and lighter (Cindy Wu, MD). Until then, use sunscreen with SPF 30 on it in the sun, as Cleveland Clinic advises.

Where will my scar be?

Low on the abdomen, placed so underwear or swimsuit bottoms cover it (Jonathan Weiler, MD, on the ASPS website). A full tummy tuck scar usually runs from hip bone to hip bone, just above the pubic area, often with a scar around the belly button; a mini tummy tuck scar is about the length of a C-section scar, 3–6 inches (Cleveland Clinic). If you have had a C-section, ASPS says the old scar may become part of the new one.

ASPS says the scar can take several months to a year to fade as much as it will. In the Miami sun, keep it covered or use sunscreen with SPF 30 for 12–18 months, as Cleveland Clinic advises.

Can I have a baby after a tummy tuck?

You can, but ASPS advises postponing a tummy tuck if you may want to be pregnant again, because weight changes can undo much of the result. For safety, a 2023 review of 17 studies and 237 patients who became pregnant after a tummy tuck found no deaths of mothers or babies and concluded that pregnancy should not be ruled out (Karunaratne and colleagues, Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, 2023). It didn't measure whether the result lasted.
