How long does chin lipo take to heal?

Most people are back at work and their daily routine within a week or two, Cleveland Clinic says of double chin surgery, which includes chin liposuction. The swelling under the jaw takes longer. For liposuction in general, The Aesthetic Society says swelling peaks around 48 hours, mostly goes down within 2 to 3 weeks and can linger slightly for up to 4 months. For the chin itself, a surgeon quoted by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) says that by about four to six weeks, the majority of swelling subsides. Your own timeline depends on how much fat was removed and whether chin lipo was done on its own or with another procedure.

Chin lipo recovery timeline, week by week

Most published recovery figures come from liposuction in general, and the chin follows the same pattern of swelling and bruising. Where a source speaks about chin and neck surgery specifically, the table says so.

The first few days

The first 48 hours are the hardest part. The Aesthetic Society says swelling peaks around 48 hours after liposuction, and under the chin that can make the jaw look fuller than before surgery for a few days. That is expected and says nothing about your final result. Your neck may feel tight when you swallow or turn your head, and the skin under the chin is often numb.

Cleveland Clinic's advice after chin and neck surgery is to keep your head elevated above your heart and to move your neck as little as possible, for example by not pulling clothes over your head and not turning your head suddenly. Front-opening tops make the first week easier. Someone should drive you home and stay with you the first night. Even with a small procedure, get up and walk around the house: MedlinePlus advises walking as soon as possible after liposuction to help prevent blood clots.

Week one

Bruising often shows along the jawline and on the upper neck. The Aesthetic Society says bruising typically disappears within 7 to 10 days, and that stitches, if your surgeon used them, are usually removed 7 to 10 days after liposuction. By the end of the first week many people notice their profile already looks different under the swelling. A surgeon quoted by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) says patients typically see a visible improvement in contour within the first week.

Weeks two to six

For liposuction in general, The Aesthetic Society says swelling mostly disappears within 2 to 3 weeks; for the chin, the surgeon quoted by ASPS says the majority of swelling subsides by about four to six weeks. This is when most people stop thinking about their chin during the day. It is also the period when a little firmness or unevenness under the skin is common while the tissue heals; it tends to soften over the following weeks. Avoid strenuous exercise for 4 to 6 weeks, as The Aesthetic Society advises, and wait for your surgeon to clear you.

Sun matters more for the face than for most liposuction areas. The Aesthetic Society says to wait a minimum of six weeks before exposure to sun and heat, including sunbathing, because it can bring the swelling back. In Miami that means a hat and shade on the way to your follow-up visits.

How long does chin lipo swelling last?

For chin liposuction, the surgeon quoted by ASPS says the majority of swelling subsides by about four to six weeks, with the most refined results around the three-month mark. For liposuction in general, The Aesthetic Society says swelling mostly goes down within 2 to 3 weeks and slight residual swelling can last for up to 4 months.

Many people find the swelling changes from day to day, looks fuller first thing in the morning or after a long or busy day, or sits a little more on one side. That is usually normal. What isn't normal is neck swelling that grows quickly, or swelling on one side that feels tight, hard and painful; both are covered in the when-to-call section below.

What does the chin strap do, and how long do you wear it?

The chin strap is a compression garment for the neck: an elastic band that wraps under the chin and fastens over the top of the head. Cleveland Clinic describes it as a way to support the skin as it heals, and an ASPS article on chin and neck contouring says compression garments can reduce swelling and support healing.

How long you wear it is your surgeon's call, and there is no single standard for the chin:

• Follow your surgeon's schedule. Some surgeons ask for it day and night at first and then only at night; others want it for longer. Their instructions come first.
• Know what the published range looks like. For liposuction in general, The Aesthetic Society says a compression garment is worn over the treated areas for 4 to 6 weeks. In one published series of 50 patients who had ultrasound-assisted chin liposuction under local anesthesia, the team asked patients to wear the strap full time for 5 days and then only at night for 2 weeks (Marwah and Handa, Indian Journal of Plastic Surgery, 2024). That is one team's routine, not a rule.
• Snug, not tight. It should press evenly without digging in, making your ears ache or making it hard to swallow or breathe. If it does, loosen it and call your surgeon; if breathing or swallowing is still hard after you loosen it, call 911.
• Keep the skin under it clean and dry. A soft cloth under the edges can stop rubbing behind the ears.

How should you sleep after chin lipo?

Sleep on your back with your head raised on two or three pillows or a wedge, in line with Cleveland Clinic's advice to keep your head elevated above your heart. A travel pillow can stop your head from rolling to the side. There is no published standard for when you can sleep on your side after chin liposuction, so ask your surgeon at your first follow-up. Many people are more comfortable waiting until the swelling and tenderness along the jaw have settled.

Numbness and tingling after chin lipo

A numb patch under the chin is common. MedlinePlus says you may feel numbness or tingling, as well as pain, for weeks after liposuction, and ASPS lists a change in skin sensation that may persist among the risks. Feeling usually comes back gradually, sometimes with itching, zaps or tingling as the nerves recover. Our guide to itching after liposuction covers what helps.

One nerve matters more in the chin: the small branch that moves the lower lip runs close to the jawline. Cleveland Clinic lists nerve injury, which could cause weakness, numbness or changes in the way the skin feels, among the risks of double chin surgery. A lopsided smile or a lower lip that won't move evenly is worth reporting to your surgeon the same day, even though it is often temporary.

When should you call your surgeon after chin lipo?

Call 911 straight away if you have trouble breathing or swallowing, neck swelling that is growing fast, or chest pain. Don't wait to reach your surgeon first. A collection of blood under the skin, called a hematoma, is one of the risks Cleveland Clinic lists for double chin surgery, and in the neck it can press on the airway.

For other problems, Cleveland Clinic advises calling your surgical team right away for bleeding, drainage, redness or swelling at an incision; dizziness; a fever higher than 100.5 degrees Fahrenheit; severe pain that medicine doesn't help; or nausea or vomiting. Cleveland Clinic lists chest pain among these too; treat it as an emergency and call 911.

When can you work out after chin lipo?

Walking is encouraged from day one. The Aesthetic Society advises avoiding strenuous exercise for 4 to 6 weeks after liposuction, because it can bring back swelling in the treated area. After chin liposuction that includes heavy lifting, which makes you strain through the neck, and hot yoga or saunas, which bring the heat the six-week sun rule warns about. How much does chin liposuction cost?

Is chin lipo right for you?

Chin liposuction removes fat. It doesn't remove loose skin or tighten the neck muscles. A surgeon quoted by ASPS recommends a neck lift, rather than liposuction alone, for patients with loose skin or poor elasticity, and a chin implant or filler where a small chin is part of the reason the neck looks full. Frequently asked questions

Is chin lipo permanent?

The fat cells removed from under your chin don't grow back: Cleveland Clinic says liposuction permanently removes fat cells. The fat cells that remain can still grow if you gain weight, and your skin keeps aging, so ASPS says results last as long as you keep a stable weight and general fitness. Most people who keep their weight steady keep their new jawline.

How long does the chin lipo procedure take?

It depends on what else is done. Cleveland Clinic says chin and neck procedures can last from 45 minutes to a few hours, depending on the type of procedure. When chin liposuction is added to another operation, it adds time to that surgery rather than being a separate appointment. Your surgeon tells you how long your surgery is expected to take at your consultation.

Will chin lipo leave a scar?

Chin liposuction is done through small incisions, usually under the chin and sometimes behind the ears, as ASPS describes for neck liposuction. The Aesthetic Society says the small incisions used for liposuction fade over a number of months and usually become barely visible. Keeping them out of the sun while they heal helps them fade.

Can J-Plasma or Renuvion be used under the chin?

Yes, within its cleared use. The FDA cleared the Renuvion APR handpiece on July 15, 2022, to improve the appearance of loose skin in the neck and under the chin. Does insurance cover chin liposuction?

Usually not. Cleveland Clinic says most health insurance companies don't cover cosmetic surgery of the neck or chin. If you are paying yourself, ask for an itemized quote so you know what the price covers, and ask about financing.

When will I see my final chin lipo results?

You see a change within the first week, but the final shape takes months. The Aesthetic Society says slight swelling can last up to 4 months after liposuction, and Cleveland Clinic says it can take 3 to 6 months for swelling to go away completely before you see the final result. Compare photos at the same angle and light rather than day to day.
